MVP points do not really do a match like yesterday’s justice. It was a game driven by emotion and massive mood swings and it almost seems wrong to break it down into figures.
But it was also a day for statistics and milestones, which were shared around unevenly.
- Daniel Vettori. Seldom has he been introduced into the attack so early; not in New Zealand anyway in an attempt to pull back Warner and to protect Southee who had not started that well. He was a constant threat, and it was a spell that started to turn the game around. He probably would have got an extra point but for that awful chipping of a full toss to mid-on which officially signalled the arrival of the later order panic.
- Kane Williamson. Is this Steady the Ship tag now official? It probably should be. With him at the crease you just felt confident, and that six to finish summed up the man. Even though most of the innings was in crisis mode he still had a Strike Rate of over 100. He increases his lead at the top of the table.
- Brendon McCullum. Just another 50 off 24 and just another opposition spearhead ripped apart. When he was second man out the target was just over 70. Once again his captaincy was full of reckless gambles that all came off.
- Trent Boult. His first spell was impressive is a little down on luck. His second spell was, well, 5-3-3-5. Quite handy surviving a couple of balls with the bat too. The feeling around seems to be that he deserves a promotion there.
