The Only TV in the Village

During the opening match of the 2015 Rugby World between the hosts England and Fiji, ITV commentator Nick Mullins commented: “They will be back in Fiji around one television hoping the generator doesn’t fail them.” Somewhat predictably Mullins – a veteran commentator with 30 years’ experience under this belt – was pilloried on social media.
Fiji winger Nemani Nadolo went as far as to describe him as a “muppet” on Twitter, although did have the good grace to later remove the offending tweet.
Fast forward three weeks to the Dominion Post of Saturday 10 October. The sports section contained an interesting feature article on All Black winger Waisake Naholo in which the player revealed that the 32-inch TV screen he’d bought his family back in Fiji is “the only one in the village, so everyone comes to sit outside and watch when there’s a big game.”
I shall keep my eyes open for the storm that will surely follow Naholo’s outrageous comment.
