The world of tennis has seen Wimbledon as a host of several events including grand slams. Among the top events in tennis, the Wimbledon Grand Slam is one of the biggest. The championship is the oldest of all the tennis tournaments. It was officially launched on 9 July 1877 at the All England Club, Wimbledon, London, and since 1988 it is the only tennis grand slam that is played on grass. The competition is played in different categories, including the men’s singles, women’s singles, and men’s, women’s and mixed doubles. Additionally, there are the junior and invitation events included.
Wimbledon 2019: Official Dates and New Rules in 2019
The 2019 Wimbledon Championships will take place at the original ground which is the Croquet Club located in Wimbledon, London, UK. In the singles competition, Novak Djokovic is the defending champion for the men’s singles, and Angelique Kerber is the defending champions for the ladies’ singles. From the official Wimbledon website, the qualifying round started on the 24th of June, and the draw is done on the 28th of June. The main tournament is set to start on Monday the 1st of July, and end on Sunday the 14th of July.
This year’s tournament is set to see some new changes. For instances, this will be the first time in the history of the tournament where a tie break will feature at 12 all in the last set. Additionally, this will be the first time in the tournament that the ladies’ singles event will include 16 qualifiers, 104 direct entrant players, and 8 wild cards. As a result, the ladies’ qualifying match will be increased to 128 players. The men’s qualifying match and the doubles elimination matches will remain at 128 players.
