No Human Is Limited
0We all have them; moments that stand out in our sporting memories. A lot of us will have common entries, but rarely will people have the same list. It’s your list, there’s no right or wrong.
Here’s some of mine.
Marco van Basten’s volley against the USSR at Euro ‘88.
Greg LeMond winning the 1989 Tour de France on the Champs-Élysées.
Mike Powell taking Bob Beamon’s Long Jump World Record at the 1991 World Athletics Championships.
Shane Warne’s first test match delivery in England in 1993.
There’s plenty of others in just under 40 years of watching sport, and I might well give you a different four if you asked me next week. But if I did, they’d be vivid memories, real highlights.
On Saturday night I added another to the list as I was absolutely transfixed by Eliud Kipchoge’s attempt to run the first sub two hour marathon – if you haven’t heard, he managed a mind blowing 1 hour 59 minutes and 40 seconds.
There are many talented people who will write amazing reflections on his achievement over the next few days. In fact, there are plenty already – seek them out and enjoy them.
In a week where rugby took a back seat to Mother Nature, it was nice to get away from talk about contingency plans, legal action and pool permutations and put another memory in the bank. Thanks Eliud, you were just what the doctor ordered.
