Helping Luke Dobney
0Environmental engineer Luke Dobney has a great shot at making the NZ Commonwealth Games men’s gymnastics team, next year.
Yip… gymnastics! Who even knew we were good at that? (Except for once briefly in 1990).
He has been named on the long list of 12, and the final team of five will be announced later this year.
Luke already has an engineering degree (with honours) and works full time at T+T, he trains at least 20 hours a week and is also studying for a post grad diploma in sport management.
Because of his study he was eligible to be selected for the NZ team that’s heading off to the World University Games (AKA Student Olympics) next month, in Taiwan.
At the moment he’s desperately trying to raise $4,000 so he can go – Gymnastics NZ gets very little funding so each athlete has to find the money themselves.
In an effort to try and charm and delight people into supporting him (via Give A Little), Luke’s found time to create a website, taught himself to shoot and edit and is blogging about and posting video of his parallel bar spinning, tramp turning, box vaulting & floor flipping.
He has a great sense of humour (an engineer with a sense of humour? Is that an oxymoron?).
He takes the mickey out of himself and posts video of his fails as well as his awesome bits.
The time-lapse video is quite mesmerising too.
His latest post is worth a watch.
He decided to do a whole training session wearing a cow onesie... well until it gets ridiculously hot (at 3:42), then (at 4:14) he gratuitously de-shirts (female audience will appreciate that bit).
He’s a decent guy who deserves a badge of honour for his work ethic alone.
His Insta page has photos from various World Cups and some athletic highlights
And his Give a Little page:
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
