How Deep Can The FIFA Corruption Go?

FIFA officials have become infamous as being some of the most corrupted people in the world and it seems like everyone in FIFA can be bought.

When Gianni Infantino was appointed as the head of FIFA on 26 February no one thought that a major change was on the way in the largest football governing organization in the world. Some people still thought and hoped that Infantino will start ringing the changes at FIFA as soon as he was selected as the main man in FIFA, but other than appointing Fatma Samoura as a Secretary General, which made her the first woman at that position, Infantino still hasn’t turned football’s largest organization into the honest and trustworthy governing body it should be.

In reality no one thought that Infantino was the character to make radical changes in an organization riddled with scandals and bribery accusations. This network includes people at every level of every national football federation and is responsible for the controversially awarded World Cups in Russia 2018 and in Qatar 2022 which brought the attention of the world media onto FIFA and Blatter. There have also been accusations of match fixing, bribery involved in past tournaments such as the South Africa World Cup in 2010, as well as various accusations of money laundering through offshore companies owned by relatives of big names such as Jack Warner.

The resignation of Michel Platini the former president of UEFA, who was considered to be one of the few honest people in football, was the final nail in the coffin for the thesis that there were at least a few people remaining in football associations that had honest intentions. The truth is that FIFA succeeded in corrupting the former French captain and national hero when they were the reason why he was suspended for a conflict of interest in a corruption scandal in which all was once again organized by the infamous Sepp Blatter.

Blatter gave a $2 million cash injection to Platini shortly before the president of FIFA was re-elected and earned a suspension from FIFA’s independent ethics committee taking Platini down with him. This happened shortly after FIFA was hit with the biggest corruption scandal in its history and major independent investigations were launched in many different countries bringing down the biggest players in FIFA and resulting in lots of arrests of football workers all round the world.

However, it is obvious that FIFA officials haven’t learned their lesson as other bribery and money laundering scandals continue to reappear in various national federations. It seems like corruption will unfortunately remain an integral part of the biggest football organisation in the world.
