Just apply the handbrake; pun intended.
The guy has done really well to land an F1 contract, and all power to him.
But the NZ media hype around his prospects has the toes curling. We get that Greg Murphy wants to promote his sport, but is this really helpful?
He is clearly battling with inexperience, unfamiliarity with the courses, and seems to be driving a dodgy cart.
And do we care about his Trump supporting girlfriend?
It’s a tough gig; so raising expectations is no good for him, or for general journalism integrity.
When people get pumped up beyond reason then critics enjoy tearing them down. And when that happens that won’t be at Lawson’s feet, it will be at those who have pumped his tyres unnecessarily for reasons that are mostly hard to understand (another pun).
Kiwi Klaxon syndrome is a thing, but it’s a worry when it’s used like this. By overhyping the guy you are actually doing him a real disservice.
