Liverpool FC Title Contenders Again?
7In the last 9 seasons of England’s Premier League the team leading on Xmas Day has gone on to win the title 8 times. The current leader Liverpool Football Club is the club currently in that position and also the only club to of missed out on the title; that 1 out of 9 seasons.
Overnight, Liverpool beat a very aggressive, defensive and pressing side in Wolverhampton Wanderers (better known as Wolves)by 2-0 at the Molineux Stadium, a game marred by terrible weather.
Liverpool scorers were the ever impressive Mohamed Salah and the rock solid Dutch Captain Virgil van Dijk.
This year Liverpool have made some big changes in personal bringing in Alisson Becker (Goalkeeper) Virgil van Dijk (Centre Back) Naby Keita (Centre Midfield) Fabinho (Defensive Midfielder) Xherdan Shaqiri (Attacking Midfield). These players, along with the already fearless strike-force of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah are now making Liverpool once again, looking like worthy title contenders.
Liverpool will play a total of 4 games in the next 2 weeks, two games of which are: Arsenal (H) and Man City (A) if they can win these 2 games I am sure they can place one hand on the trophy, but, the season is long and Liverpool have been hit by 3-4 major injuries already. Liverpool Manager Jurgen Klopp will need to spend wisely in the January transfer window and bring in players for cover and also to help his squad improve and maybe, who knows, win that one trophy that has eluded them – The Premier League Trophy.
The last time Liverpool won the league title it was under the old format called The English League Championship Division One, which they won in 1989/90 under the management of Kenny Dalglish. They have come second twice in the new format – The Premiership.
Could this be their year? Only time will tell and the players have theirs and the clubs fate in their own hands. As an avid fan of the club, I have no doubts this could finally be our year.
Good work Jason and welcome on board the Sportsfreak express. As someone who grew up in the 80’s and (i) experienced the Liverpool dominance of that decade and (ii) listened from afar to Man Utd fans talk about their title drought, I never thought Liverpool would experience one of there own like this. As a neutral, I’d like to see the monkey off your back. It’s going to be tight though. Man City will come at your hard and what effect will European competition have on proceedings? I wish you and your fellow supporters well though.

(it’s been a long week).
Thanks Aiden. I am hoping we can finally get that monkey off. Lets hope we don’t have a big choke like 2014. I think Utd will come right now with Old Gunna. Glad to see overnight City and Chelsea both lost leaving us 4 points clear at the summit. Best Xmas present ever.
As a footie mum from way back, I love footie but just drop in on the premier league now and then – it’s really good to have this set out so simply and now I’ll be able to follow the rest of the season with my three sons! Thanks!
One error in that Henderson captained the team in this game with Milner as vice captain. Van Dijk is 3rd choice followed by Gini as 4th.
Van Dijk will be the permanent captain in time I think.
Sorry I should of said Dutch International Team Captain VVD and not Dutch Captain VVD which could be wrongly read. Sorry i will more precise with my wording next time as I know whom the Captain is of a side I have supported for 45 years. Thanks for the feedback Tait. Cheers JT
Jason , great article , good reading at the beach Kippa
