Lockerroom on the up and up
0By The Spotter
Award-winning journalist and writer Suzanne McFadden’s ‘Lockeroom’ arrived with a much-needed bang on the NZ sports media landscape a little over six months ago. If you haven’t already taken a look, the quality of the stories and features are definitely worth the visit. And very importantly, it’s been giving the sportswomen of NZ a voice in the media they likely otherwise would not have gotten.
And from today, Suzanne is seeking to take ‘Lockeroom’ to the next level in launching a crowd-funding campaign. Some decent financial support would leave Suzanne with opportunities to employ more contributors, and take ‘Lockeroom’ from a niche audience and more into the mainstream consciousness- where it would surely and rightfully hold its own and prosper.
Who knows what the future could hold. ‘Lockeroom’ is a ground-breaker, and to look five years down the line would be really interesting. I can almost envisage by that time that the initial purpose may have been superseded by a site that is wider in its scope, but with its strong initial focus still at its core. Because hopefully well before that time in the future, more and more will continue to have become a bit more enlightened. All pure speculation on my behalf, though!
It is definitely a site on a quick upward curve, but for it to grow and provide even more quality for the discerning sports fan, it’s going to take a wee bit more than just what Suzanne can throw at it.
So if you value quality journalism (and have a few extra pennies lying around), take a minute to read Suzanne’s message just below and help make ‘Lockeroom’ even better. If you wish to donate, just visit here .
It’s time to help fill a gap in sports journalism
For decades, women’s sport has been underserved by New Zealand media. Today, we’ve launched a funding campaign to help ensure this gap is filled.
Six months ago, the team at Newsroom launched LockerRoom. Ever since, we’ve been dedicated to filling a gap in sports journalism, highlighting the achievements of New Zealand women in sport. These are powerful stories – inspirational, compelling and important – and we need your help to continue telling them.
Our mission is to shine light on women in sport, with female journalists at the helm. However, as women’s sporting organisations and athletes will know, securing funding through conventional methods is not easy. That’s where you come in.
LockerRoom will now be funded by reader contributions, which will go exclusively towards funding this section and its journalism. Your support will empower us to expand our coverage, with a focus on stories that raise the profile and recognition of our remarkable female athletes, coaches, teams and the people who support them.
We’d love to have you join our support crew! Starting today, you can help fuel our mission with either a one-time or monthly donation. Every bit counts, however big or small you can manage. If we all pitch in together as a community, we can take LockerRoom to the next level.
We look forward to having you join our team, alongside our award-winning writer and editor, Suzanne McFadden, as well as columnists Taylah Hodson-Tomokino, Sarah Cowley Ross and Juliette Drysdale. Together, we can transform the way women in sport are covered in our media.
