Masters Dinners
1In the golf world it’s Masters week, the year’s first Major and the only one played at the same venue; Augusta National in Georgia in America’s South.
It’s a place full of traditions; the legacy of its founder – legendary American amateur Bobby Jones, the smell of old money and pimento cheese sandwiches, the immaculately presented vista of a billiard green course and blue ponds, and the prize the players want – the Green Jacket.
There’s also those things that some would rather not get mentioned, like the Old South legacies of racism and sexism.
There’s also now the added drama of those who moved over to LIV Golf who will be there, such as former winners Dustin Johnson and human lightning rod Patrick Reed.
One of those traditions that goes under the radar though is the Champions Dinner, which gets held on the Tuesday evening before the tournament. It’s hosted by the defending champion and the menu is set by them, which in the past has led to some interesting menus. In 1998 a then 22-year-old Tiger Woods served up cheeseburgers and milkshakes, while in 2004 Canadian Mike Weir featured elk and wild boar.
Typically, the winner features their home cuisine; last year Hideki Matsuyama had sushi, sashimi, and wagyu beef, Australian Adam Scott included Moreton Bay bugs in a surf n’ turf, Argentine Angel Cabrera went with meat and lots of it, and predictably South African Charl Schwartzel opted for a braai.
Defending champion Scottie Scheffler is from Texas, and this year’s menu nods to his Southwest roots.
So, this got the contributors at Sportsfreak Towers thinking… What if we could choose our Masters dinner? These are what we came up with, and credit Harbour Heather for the graphics.
Whose invitation are you hoping for?
