QUIZ: ‘The Swinehound’ #5
6By The Spotter
Welcoming old and new quizzers alike to the ‘Swinehound’ for 2019…
Since the launch of the ‘hound quiz last year to as little fanfare as possible, the prestigious (cough), and totally fictitious Swinehound Shield has gone from first-time stalemate, then on to Wellington (Matt Smith), Mid Canterbury (Andrew Mitchell), and back in December, to the Bay of Plenty (Martin Hearnden). Can Martin/The Bay retain it, or will it be on the move again?
Rules are the same as for the first four editions- No cheating by way of temptation in consulting that arch know-it-all Mr Google (not even for a question interpretation). Consulting a family sports trainspotter is however permitted (Birth Certificate to be supplied as proof- only joking). And no wussy half points awarded. I have complete faith in the honesty of all participants(!)
Best place to submit answers is in the Comments section below. Or you can tweet them to Graeme @sportsfreak. You may/may not get a reply. Best also not to view other peoples’ posted answers until you’ve also posted. Avert the eyes as much as poss! It’s not ideal, I know.
THE SWINEHOUND #5
1 Who am I? I was a central participant in two of the most famous incidents in NZ sports history. Yet on both occasions I was only selected in the teams as a last-minute replacement.
2 Which multi-medal winning, legally blind NZ Paralympic swimming champion retired from international competition a few months ago?
3 If you potted red, pink, red, blue, red, green, red, black, red, brown, red, yellow in a game of snooker, how many points would you have?
4 Which former All Black loose forward reckoned players ‘had better piss blood for the jersey’?
5 It was a locally-produced TV show which ran years and years ago. It was called ‘On the Mat’. Which sport was it about?
6 At the 58 second mark in the following video an All Black scores a try- Who was it, and what is his son’s first name (who was also an All Black)? And did the opponent in this notorious match score any points?
7 From which language did the scoring system in tennis originate?
8 In 2010 Spain and Holland met in the FIFA World Cup Final. That marked the end of an amazing 80-year sequence of countries who had played in football World Cup Finals. What was the nature of that sequence? (Incidentally, that particular revelation came into my head just before the 2014 World Cup, and was the basis of the first piece I wrote for sportsfreak. Call it a eureka moment- perhaps the only one I’ll ever have for the rest of my days)!
You have around 24 hours to get your answers in. Best of luck to all intrepid players..
Remember to send in any good questions for the next edition of the ‘hound- it’s getting harder and harder to come up with decent ones myself. So far it’s been ok but really could do with a bit of help! Send any thru’ to me at: talltree@xtra.co.nz (Paul). Just pop ‘Quiz Q’ in the subject line. Grateful thanks!
Trying to defend a title I didn’t realise I had won…
1. Brian McKechnie
2. Dont know and I should
3.33
4.Alex Wylie (guess)
5. Wrestling
6.Hamish McDonald and Scotland scored 0. Is Leon his son?
7. French.
8. Don’t remember and I should…
Think the last one kind of got lost in the Christmas rush-it was on Xmas Eve- and I made a right pig’s ear of the scoring after too many Pale Ales..
The Shield could be returning to the Capital via Matt Smith. He has six right. Martin scored four. Looks like Question 8 could be the killer..
And I will definitely post all the answers on here tomorrow evening. May not have done that the last quiz, apologies. Reason was above!
Only two bods been brave enough to try so far. Btw, Matt only missed Qs 3 (by a whisker) and Q8. An impressive effort.
1. Brian McKechnie
2. Mary Fisher
3. 33
4. Grizz Wylie
5. Wrestling
6. Hamish and Angus MacDonald. Scotland didn’t score in the game
7. French
8. First time anyone other than a South American team was in a final outside of Europe?
Question 8 is doing my head in Paul!
We’ve got dual holders this time, both with six answers correct. Matt Smith and a strong latecomer, Richard Euston. Well done, gents. That was impressive.

Don’t forget either that I am on the lookout for some great questions for future Swinehound quizzes (just means you can’t enter when your Q appears). Send thru’ to me at: talltree@xtra.co.nz. And I’ll credit your name next to your Q. in the quiz. Cheers!
