Swinehound Quiz #6
2By The Spotter
Have finally got round to compiling another ‘Swinehound’. Apologies for the rain delay. The defending joint holders of the ‘Swinehound Shield’ are: Matt Smith from the Capital, and Richard Euston (Auckland)- or is it Harbour?
Play fair with your answers, please: Google is absolutely a banned substance- it’s the stanozolol of quizzing.
Post answers in the Comments section below the quiz. Or it’s possible to tweet to sportsfreak Twitter. It’s tougher than the last one, I suspect- the best of luck. I’ll post the answers in the Comments late tomorrow evening.
1 Rod Chester and Neville McMillan were the principal authors of what definitive, iconic sports book?
2 Which football club from the lower North Island took its name from the time when a local church group would keep an eye on the youths that stayed out late in their neighbourhood?
3 An incredible happening: What is the surname of the NZ family at one particular Commonwealth Games that had Dad in the commentary box (in reality he should have been competing), while Mum, Daughter and Son competed in their respective events?
4 Which Kiwi won gold and obliterated the World Record by over three seconds in their individual event at the second Olympics of the millennium?
5 Aside from the legendary Belgian, Eddy Merchx, who else in 1987 became the only other male cyclist to have won the ‘Triple Crown’ (Giro D’Italia, Tour De France, UCI World road race title in the same year)? A hint: He’s Irish. -This question supplied by Aiden McLaughlin.
6 One for the cricket anoraks: 1987 again, and which player opened the batting and bowling for NZ at the World Cup held in India and Pakistan?
7 Which single-day sporting event always draws the world’s biggest crowd?
8 In which year did Sir Edmund Hillary ascend Mt Everest?
Just finally, I should promote this thing properly. Give me feedback if you would like me to post one at least every fortnight on here.
And if you’d like to see an actual physical Swinehound Shield and for it to go around on a quiz tour of sports clubs (and pubs?), then please give me your feedback and if I get some proper bites, I’ll see if I can go about making questions and holding a night somewhere (even down country a bit?) We’ll see!
Cheers, Paul. (talltree@xtra.co.nz)
And Andrew Mitchell from Mid Canterbury becomes a two-time holder (as is Matt Smith). He killed the competition stone dead with an immediate 7/8. Congrats. And interestingly, still no-one has managed a successful defence.
Answers were: 1. Men in Black 2. Stop Out (the greatest team name in all of NZ sport IMO) 3. The Mills clan (Colleen, Donna and Phillip all competed in the Athletics prog, whilst Dad, Les of the gym fame, commentated- but was rated unlucky not to join the others) 4. Sarah Ulmer (in the 3,000m pursuit) 5. Stephen Roche 6. Martin Snedden 7. The Indianapolis 500 (usually tops 300,000 people) 8. 1953.
Indeed surprising that anyone has yet to win two quizzes in a row, when you consider that, by rights, as a lawyer Andrew Mitchell should theoretically be able to mount a successful defence..
