The Group
3Steve Hansen today on the Cruden issue: “Once we get this out of the way he’ll be coming back into the group”
The group? What about team or squad? What does group actually mean?
This is an irritating neologism, and one that would seem to be a particularly New Zealand thing. You never heard Sir Alex Ferguson talk about “The Group”
Brendon McCullum is another offender here. He is always talking about the culture in the group. It’s almost like they are talking about some commune or something.
Is it a misplaced attempt at sophistication? Perhaps The Group is meant to sound more intellectual than the squad. Help us if that is the case.
Clearly a memo has gone out, and some highly paid sports management public relations guru has decided this is a good thing. But, unless some subtellty is explained to the masses can we please just use terms that actually make sense?
For now, it sounds like something coming out of some soon-to-be-forgotten Polytech Middle Management course.
It actually started with John Mitchell “my group”…..bless
And, ironically, they talked about Cruden’s journey yesterday. Even though the fact there was no journey at all was why it was a story in the first place.
Don’t have a problem with him using terms like ‘ group ‘ or ‘ journey ‘ …it’s all about how well the team are performing, what I really like about Hansen is you know he’s not full of pc verbal diarrhoea, the bloke calls a spade a spade, talks good sense about the game in interviews etc, clearly a top coach.
