The Head-Scratcher Cricket Quiz
7By The Spotter
One probably has to get up very early to (pardon the pun) stump some of these sportsfreak cricket trainspotters. The questions below are pretty much the absolute limit of what I can give-Had to back-check some facts . Good luck!
- In the seven-test 1970-71 Ashes series in Australia (which England won 2-0), how many English LBW appeals were upheld by the local umpires. a) 0 b) 1 c) 2
- With his batting, this NZ international came of age in the 1982-83 Shell Trophy 3-day comp, scoring three centuries and averaging 55.75 for the season. Included in his tally was a notable partnership with Matthew Toynbee against Auckland. Who is he?
- Vinoo Mankad is famous for the bowler’s end run-out bearing his name, but he was once also the world record holder for being one half of the partnership for the highest opening stand in test cricket of 413 vs NZ in 1956. Who was his partner in that stand?
- In the 1985 NZ-Australia test at the SCG, Allan Border was bowled by surely one of the best balls in NZ test cricket history. It happened in the first innings. Who was the bowler?
- In the 1983 Victorian Bushfire charity ODI international, which Kiwi began his coming of age at international level with a sublime batting performance for 66 off 67 balls on a slow and rather damp wicket?
- This person played in a famous, nail-biting test victory in the 1980s and was the wicket keeping cover for Warren Lees during the 1982-83 World Series Cup ODI tournament in Australia. Who was it?
- They were the first twins, male or female, to play test cricket together. It happened at Headingley in 1984. Who were they? (and no, it wasn’t the Waughs or the Hollioakes).
- Which Indian player, hugely influential in the 1983 World Cup final against the West Indies, followed up with a scarcely believable total of one miserable run in six completed innings against the same opponents in a three-test series not long afterwards?
- Which umpire published the autobiography ‘Alone in the Middle’ in 2003?
- One player appeared in all of the first four NZ test cricket victories. Who was that?
- Four Bracewell brothers have appeared in first-class cricket? Who are they?

JB- I can 100% assure you that none of the Qs are from any Cricket museum tweets..hope you aren’t using that as an excuse to wimp out of having a go haha 🙂
To be fair, I’m certainly no cricket mastermind- the Qs are the limit of what I’m capable of. Just enjoy setting quizzes, and I’ve come to realise there’s quite an art to giving good questions to punters..
And the last two Qs are from the good old sportsfreak himself..
I’ll have a go but Ive got very few
1 b surely it can’t be a & c seems generous
2 John Wright
3.
4 the ball I seem to remember was bowled by Braces but I thought that was in NZ. If it’s not that 1 I’ll go Vaughan Brown
5. Martin Crowe
6. Tony Blain though I think he would of been 2 young.
7. They were female
8. Kapil Dev
9. David Sheppard
10. J R Red
11. Brendon, John, Mark & Doug
Some of these are hard! Surprised by how hazy my memory of 1982/83 is. Anyway, here goes:

3. Roy
4. J Bracewell?
5. M Crowe
6. hard. Peter Webb? (played at Dunedin 1979/80)

9. Steve Dunne. Good read.
10. J Alabaster

Cheers guys. Good effort Jason, think It’s well-known that Andrew has pretty flawless cricket knowledge- maybe like trying to take on Juventus in Italian football, it’s a blimin’ hard ask!
THE ANSWERS: All just refer above to Andrew’s post because he only got number 2 incorrect. It was Ian Smith.
To give their first names: Q3: Pankaj Roy Q7: Liz and Rosemary Signal
Andrew (@shortflyslip) is sportsfreak’s cricket trivia… (in the words of Chris Gayle) World universe boss, for now at least. Thanks for playing 🙂
Meant to say- isn’t Q1 unbelievable?! I heard it last week. I knew the umpires were pretty dodgy in that series, but that bad? Holy f***. Unreal. And even with 13 men the Ockers still couldn’t win a single test of seven- the only time I think that they haven’t won at least one at home against the English…I might be wrong.
Better stop posting comments for a bit. Making too much work for the sportsfreak..
Re Q1 and LBWs in Australia. Tony Grieg used to windup Bill Lawry relentlessly on the topic because Lawry was never given out LBW in a test in Australia. I seem to remember Gavaskar leading his team off the park there once in protest at the umpiring? The good old days before “Elite panels” and DRS.
