The Reality of the NFL – Draft insight from Hamish ‘@Girvana’ Girvan
1Now the NFL draft has been and gone we can now look forward to how the hype will translate into the field
Cleveland Browns surprised the NFL pundits in the days leading up to the draft by signalling they would take Oklahoma Quarterback Baker Mayfield. A hot head with a great arm Bakers personality is bigger than his talent. Arrested for public intoxication and resisting arrest during the 2017 season and gesticulating with his anatomy in a game against easy beats Kansas this season he certainly ruffled some feathers.
The New York Jets picking at 3rd place in the draft and needing a quarterback would have been quietly stoked the Browns blinked first. Slated to go between 5th and 10th in the weeks preceding Mayfield certainly has now got much pressure on himself as the as the Browns team have as well.
We will see how Mayfield copes with the start of his NFL career on this seasons “Hard Knocks” TV series slated to begin in late July. This reality series has traditionally been a grave yard for any team featured in terms of any chance of a successful season and playoff appearances. The Browns cannot really stoop any lower than last season with their 0-16 record. And their history of drafting quarterbacks has been a shambles at best. Brandon Weeden anyone ?
Another decent reality series available in New Zealand is Amazon Primes “All or Nothing”. The latest series focuses on the Dallas Cowboys 2017 season whereby the payoffs were actually looking a reality for a good part of the season. This fly on the wall series is especially insightful to how coaches deal with pressures both on and off the field.
Also featured this year are the Michigan Wolverines college football team which no doubt of few of them will appear in the NFL at some stage in the next few years.
As a side note The All Blacks 2017 season is also part of this concept and will begin in June this year.
Both Hard Knocks and All or Nothing are great fill-ins before the real stuff hits the gridiron in August.
