The Slashing Continued
5It’s the Death by the Cut of 1,000 knives.
Last year it was the removal of Plunket Shield cricket form the radio,. And we had something to say about that. We even ran a petition, that was slightly successful. There was online commentary after Christmas.
Well up until the start of this season when NZ Cricket decided it wasn’t worth it after all.
This year it’s the news that there will be no radio coverage of the monsoon test series against Sri Lanka this month.
There has been a comment that this is down to Sri Lanka cricket clipping the ticket a bit much. There’s an element of painting them out to be a bit like the BCCI here, but it’s hard to see the motivation for that, and no figures have been given.
Let’s hope there’s no generic racial profiling going on here.
So why does this matter? Let’s not forget that Radio Sport was built on live cricket commentary. Subsequent takeover by the Biomag Ignite talkback format is a sign of the time, but not at the expense of denial of service
Why do we worry? Because, somehow, we still care.
There are still people out there who had intended of putting the radio under the pillow. Possibly not a large demographic, probably not a sexy demographic, but a loyal one.
Remember your roots.
But it’s the insidious creeping nature of this. What cut is in store for next year? Maybe an Ian Jones hosted sponsored Super Rugby build-up show instead of commentary of a home test match?
Time to come up with the truth about this; NZ cricket and Radio Sport. Because we’re getting a bit weary in our outrage
