The Swinehound of a Sports Quiz 3
5By The Spotter
It’s the third edition of the ‘hound quiz, and it’s a bit of a ‘who?’ round.
The first bordered on the obscure; the second seemed to be pitched about right. Can anyone knock Wellington’s Matt Smith off his champ’s perch? Last time out he achieved perfection. One point for each answer. No half points and one point only per question:
1 You play three holes of golf: A par 3, a par 4 and a par 5 (in that order). The first hole goes badly and you card a triple-bogey. On the second you hit form dramatically and score an eagle. On the final, you hit about the best shot of your life and end up scoring an albatross: How many strokes have you taken, and how many under par do you sit?
2 Prior to Will Somerville, who was the last 34 year-old to debut for NZ in test cricket?
3 Who was the last driver aside from Seb Vettel or Lewis Hamilton to win the World Formula One Grand Prix title?
4 Who was the at-times mercurial NZ Warriors centre who had a major hand in getting his team to the NRL Grand Final of 2011? (A hint: his surname begins with ‘I’, and sounds practically identical to the Japanese word for ‘dog’).
5 Who yelled ‘Kick it to the shithouse’ within earshot of Queen Elizabeth II in the early 90s?
6 Who was the wheelchair-bound NZ athlete who won gold at the 1982 Commonwealth Games, and in which sport?
7 Which sport uses the term ‘Icing’? (Sorry, cake-making doesn’t cut it for even a half point..)
8 Who played test cricket for NZ in the 70s and 80s as a bowler and then faced the All Blacks in a rugby encounter in 1988, in a tour match in Australia?
Best of luck. I’ll post the answers soon-ish in the Comments forum at the bottom.
And absolutely no Google (not even for checking any terminology..!)
Time’s running out to challenge Matt’s 50% score- he surely wouldn’t be happy with that.
Will the Swinehound Shield be staying in the Capital for a further defence? It’s looking likely- unless there’s a Marlborough 1973 on the horizon..
Answers: 1. Ten strokes/ Two under par 2. Luke Ronchi (in 2015) 3. Nico Rosberg (in 2016) 4. Krisnan Inu 5. Bob Dwyer (near the end of ‘91 Rugby WC Final) 6. Neroli Fairhall, Archery 7. Ice hockey-Icing is an infraction in the sport of ice hockey. It occurs when a player shoots the puck across both the centre red line and the opposing team’s goal line, and the puck remains untouched. Play is resumed with a faceoff in the defending zone of the team that committed the infraction. 8. Brendon Bracewell.
*Wording of question 3 possibly a bit misleading, sorry. But Paul Rooney was correct in any case, well done.
And the result is a draw: 4 each to Matt Smith and Paul Rooney. Under Swinehound Shield rules, the holder doesn’t by rights hang on to the title with a draw.
Here is a play-off question for Matt and Paul (is the title staying in the capital, or will it move to the Waikato?)
Who did Kiwi tennis star Chris Lewis beat in his semi-final of Wimbledon 1983, and who in turn defeated him in the final?
If still a stalemate, then this: Who was the trainer of NZ horse, ‘Ethereal’, which landed the 2001 Caulfield Cup-Melbourne Cup double?
Apologies Matt and Paul, have been alerted to a late night entry on the @sportsfreak twitter from Andrew Mitchell, who has emerged from the shadows and scored 5/8. Correctly answered Qs 1,3,4,6 &7. A new champ is crowned.
Good work there, Andrew. We look forward to a hard-fought title defence the next time…possibly against about seven others that are known to have taken the plunge to formally have a go!
Cheers..
Good work Paul, I look forward to the next instalment.
Thanks, Aiden. Am edging ever closer to hauling my reclusive butt on to Twitter. And if do so, am intending to stage the quiz on a more routine basis, engage more, and ultimately and hopefully take it places. Well, that’s my idea at least 🙂 Call it a New Year’s resolution!
