The Swinehound Quiz: 10th anniversary ed.
7By Paul Montague
The tenth version of ‘the Swinehound’ sports quiz. Last time wasn’t good- absolutely no-one had a go. Be good if someone could at least have a crack this time.
Defending champ is Scott MacLean. The great thing about the ‘hound is that so far not a soul has been able to defend their crown.
If anyone manages to defend the perennially invisible Swinehound Shield three times in succession, they win the book ‘Lion’s 83’ by the ex UK top rugby journalist, David Frost. It’s a book full of excellent memories (for NZers, at least), including the great ‘Trapper’ Loveridge’s test on Athletic Park.
Your answer attempts can be posted below the quiz, in the Comments. The answers will be posted on Tuesday. This time we are back to the original eight question format (plus an added bonus Q- it’s non-sport related, for smthng diff!).
- Which sport traditionally commenced with ‘a bully-off’?
- What links: Ex- NZ Governor General Sir Arthur Porritt, Ato Boldon of Trinidad, and Maurice Greene of the USA?
- A perfect game in darts is known as a 9-dart finish. Working down from the number 501, six perfect darts (2 x 180 points), would leave you a total of 141 to get down to zero to finish. *You must always finish with a ‘Double’ (eg. Double 20 = 40), or the Bull. THE QUESTION: If your seventh dart strikes ‘Treble 20’, and the eighth dart ‘Treble 19’, what number on the board is required for the perfect game with the ninth and final dart? Meaning: What board number (which then gets multiplied by two)?
- Jeff Green was the first-ever coach of the NZ Breakers basketball team, but who succeeded him?
- NAME THE YEAR: A schoolboy plays on the wing for the All Blacks. A few months later, an All Black forward is sent off for supposed dangerous play, but is then immediately recalled by the referee. (A hint: It’s between 1980-85)
- Which multi-skilled Australian sportswoman gained third place in the AFL combined gender longest-kick competition in September?
- Which human rights advocate played No. 8 for West Coast in their Ranfurly Shield rugby challenge against Canterbury in 1984?
- ‘Hey, Boomer’ was a call made in reference to the nickname of which national sports team from which country?
- What culinary concoction was pioneered accidentally by a resident of Tijuana, Mexico; Caesar Gardini?

Ok; the winner now established. Well done to RYAN NIXON. An imposing 8/9. Excellent.
Myself and all the Swinehound Board (my wife, the Daddy longlegs in the lavatory that we haven’t yet disturbed, and the blackbird who has constant residence on our back lawn) welcome Ryan’s tilt at Swinehound #11. Looking forward to seeing if he can finally break the hoodoo of no-one defending the title. Go for three more and you’ve got the book, Ryan- I’m tired of mentioning it. It needs a new home 🙂
