The Western Sydney Wanderers Phenomena
1West Sydney is the Passchendaele of the Great Australian Sporting Codes War. For so long the bastion of Rugby League it has seen major offensives from AFL and football in recent years. First of all there was the slightly pompously named Greater West Sydney Giants, and last year the West Sydney Wanderers in the A-League.
And what a debut season it was for the West Sydney Wanderers; they became the first modern day franchise to make the final in their debut season, even better than the Storm.
It was more than that. They bridged the gap between ‘old soccer’ (often referred to as ‘wogball’ in those parts) and ‘new football’ (the A-League). And how the fans got on board. Extraordinary really that the newest club in the competition produced the best atmosphere.
There were some murmurings from green-eyed clubs in the A-League that Football Australia had given them a helping hand. But remember this is West Sydney; their contribution was minor compared to the GWS Giants where AFL threw millions at them, and whose main legacy is currently playing on the wing for the Wallabies.
So now we wait to see whether they suffer that Difficult Second Season Syndrome. In music the likes of Men at Work, Tracy Chapman found that tough. In the A-League the obvious disaster was Gold Coast Untied.
However, by the looks of the video below it is a club maintaining the momentum, and they now have their first major sponsor on board..
There are some good goals in there too
